Which Hebrew Gematria Method Should You Choose?
There are several methods of calculating Hebrew Gematria. Each method follows a different numerical system, so the same Hebrew word can produce different results depending on the method selected.
Here is how the five calculation methods work.
1. Standard Gematria (Mispar Hechrechi)
Standard Gematria, also known as Mispar Hechrechi, is the most commonly used Hebrew letter-number system.
It assigns numerical values to the 22 Hebrew letters, ranging from 1 to 400.
The five final letter forms retain the same numerical values as their regular forms.
For example:
- א (Aleph) = 1
- ב (Bet) = 2
- ג (Gimel) = 3
- י (Yod) = 10
- כ (Kaf) = 20
- ל (Lamed) = 30
- ק (Qof) = 100
- ר (Resh) = 200
- ש (Shin) = 300
- ת (Tav) = 400
The final letters ך, ם, ן, ף and ץ have values of 20, 40, 50, 80 and 90 respectively.
2. Large Gematria (Mispar Gadol)
Mispar Gadol is a variation of Standard Gematria in which the five final Hebrew letters receive higher numerical values.
Unlike the standard system, final forms are assigned values ranging from 500 to 900.
| Hebrew letter | Standard value | Large Gematria value |
|---|---|---|
| ך (Final Kaf) | 20 | 500 |
| ם (Final Mem) | 40 | 600 |
| ן (Final Nun) | 50 | 700 |
| ף (Final Pe) | 80 | 800 |
| ץ (Final Tsadi) | 90 | 900 |
This method produces different totals for words containing final Hebrew letters.
3. Ordinal Gematria (Mispar Siduri)
Ordinal Gematria calculates numerical values according to the position of each letter in the Hebrew alphabet.
The first letter receives a value of 1, the second receives 2, and the sequence continues until the twenty-second letter receives 22.
For example:
- א (Aleph) = 1
- ב (Bet) = 2
- ג (Gimel) = 3
- ד (Dalet) = 4
- ה (He) = 5
- י (Yod) = 10
- כ (Kaf) = 11
- ת (Tav) = 22
Final letter forms retain the ordinal position of their corresponding regular letters.
4. Reduced Gematria (Mispar Katan)
Reduced Gematria, also called Mispar Katan, reduces each Hebrew letter’s standard numerical value to a single digit before adding the values together.
For example:
- י (Yod) = 10 → 1
- כ (Kaf) = 20 → 2
- ל (Lamed) = 30 → 3
- ק (Qof) = 100 → 1
- ר (Resh) = 200 → 2
- ש (Shin) = 300 → 3
- ת (Tav) = 400 → 4
The reduced values of all letters are then added to calculate the final result.
This is different from calculating the full Standard Gematria total and reducing that total afterward.
5. Digital Root (Mispar Katan Mispari)
Digital Root calculation starts by adding the standard numerical values of all Hebrew letters.
The resulting total is then repeatedly reduced by adding its digits until a single-digit number remains.
For example, if a word has a Standard Gematria value of 376:
376 → 3 + 7 + 6 = 16
16 → 1 + 6 = 7
The final digital root is 7.
Worked Example: Hebrew Word שלום (Shalom)
Let’s calculate the numerical value of שלום (Shalom), a Hebrew word commonly translated as peace.
Using Standard Gematria, its letters have the following values:
| Hebrew letter | Name | Numerical value |
|---|---|---|
| ש | Shin | 300 |
| ל | Lamed | 30 |
| ו | Vav | 6 |
| ם | Final Mem | 40 |
| Total | 376 |
Therefore:
300 + 30 + 6 + 40 = 376
The Standard Gematria value of שלום is 376.
To calculate its Digital Root:
3 + 7 + 6 = 16
1 + 6 = 7
The digital root is therefore 7.
Under Large Gematria (Mispar Gadol), the final Mem (ם) receives a value of 600 instead of 40.
The calculation becomes:
300 + 30 + 6 + 600 = 936
This example demonstrates why selecting the correct Gematria method is important.
Hebrew Alphabet and Gematria Values
The Hebrew alphabet contains 22 primary letters. Each letter has an assigned numerical value in Standard Gematria.
The following table provides a reference for the Hebrew alphabet and its corresponding values.

| ד | Dalet | 4 |
| ה | He | 5 |
| ו | Vav | 6 |
| ז | Zayin | 7 |
| ח | Chet | 8 |
| ט | Tet | 9 |
| י | Yod | 10 |
| כ | Kaf | 20 |
| ל | Lamed | 30 |
| מ | Mem | 40 |
| נ | Nun | 50 |
| ס | Samekh | 60 |
| ע | Ayin | 70 |
| פ | Pe | 80 |
| צ | Tsadi | 90 |
| ק | Qof | 100 |
| ר | Resh | 200 |
| ש | Shin | 300 |

Frequently Asked Questions About Hebrew Gematria
What is Hebrew Gematria?
Hebrew Gematria is a traditional Jewish practice that assigns numerical values to Hebrew letters. The values of individual letters are added together to calculate the numerical total of a word or phrase. It has historically been used in Jewish textual interpretation and study.
What is the difference between Standard Gematria and Large Gematria?
Standard Gematria assigns final Hebrew letters the same numerical values as their regular forms. Large Gematria, or Mispar Gadol, assigns the five final forms values of 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900.
Consequently, words containing final letters can have different totals under these two methods.
What is the numerical value of שלום (Shalom)?
Using Standard Gematria, שלום has a numerical value of 376.
The calculation is:
300 + 30 + 6 + 40 = 376.
Its Digital Root is 7.
What is Mispar Siduri in Gematria?
Mispar Siduri is the ordinal method of Hebrew Gematria. It assigns values according to the position of each letter in the Hebrew alphabet, starting with 1 for Aleph and ending with 22 for Tav.
Is Reduced Gematria the same as Digital Root?
No. Reduced Gematria reduces the standard value of each letter individually before adding the values together.
Digital Root first calculates the complete Standard Gematria total and then reduces the resulting number to a single digit.
These methods can produce different results.
Can I calculate English names using this Hebrew Gematria Calculator?
No. This calculator is designed for Hebrew Unicode letters. English names and Latin transliterations are not automatically converted into Hebrew.
To calculate English-script names, use a suitable Latin alphabet numerology calculator.
Do final Hebrew letters have different numerical values?
Yes, depending on the calculation method.
In Standard Gematria, final forms share the values of their regular counterparts. In Mispar Gadol, the five final forms receive higher values ranging from 500 to 900.
Does the same Gematria number mean two words have the same meaning?
No. Two Hebrew words can share the same numerical total without having the same linguistic meaning or origin.
Numerical similarities may be explored in traditional interpretive contexts, but they do not establish semantic equivalence.
Is Hebrew Gematria scientifically proven?
Gematria is a traditional religious and interpretive practice, not a scientifically validated predictive system. Its numerical calculations are mathematical, but interpretations based on matching totals are matters of tradition and belief.
